Congratulations on your re-election. We are looking forward to working with you to help tackle illegal and harmful air pollution in Greater Manchester, which is damaging people’s lungs right across the region and limiting the health of future generations.
We are writing to you as people who live in Manchester, clean air campaigners and organisations, alongside Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation, as we are very concerned about this invisible killer and to ask you to publish more ambitious clean air plans in your first 100 days?
We want to congratulate you and your team for your current proposals to roll out the country’s largest clean air zone (CAZ) outside London. We recognise the leadership this has taken in working with the 10 authorities across the region. When the CAZ is launched it could be a gamechanger for the city’s toxic air, helping protect future generations from harm and protect thousands of people who live with lung conditions.
But it isn’t going fast or far enough
Current plans to phase implementation from 2022 will cost more lives and put more people at risk. Toxic air causes new lung conditions, worsens existing ones and stunts the growth of children’s lungs. Every year 1,200 early deaths in Greater Manchester are caused from exposure to air pollution so it is no exaggeration to say that accelerating the pace of implementation will help save lives.
We also want to see far more details about how you plan to tackle pollution from private vehicles that aren’t currently included in the CAZ plans, given they account for 80% of miles travelled on GM roads.
Publish a new plan to protect little lungs
Lastly, we are calling on you to publish a region-wide funded programme for schools to enable them to set out air pollution busting schemes, such as school streets.
Greater Manchester already has the worst performing local authorities for childhood asthma hospital admissions in the country, specifically in Tameside, Oldham and Manchester. Toxic air is only likely to be making these trends worse.
Cleaner air doesn’t just save lives, it saves money
In Greater Manchester, cleaner air will save up to £500 million for businesses and public services every year and benefit the poorest communities the most. It is critical for creating a fairer society, helping the city recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and deliver on climate action.
The results of the Mayoral election clearly demonstrate that the public are backing you on this important issue. The people of Manchester welcome your vision of a Green City, show them you will go further to protect the planet for future generations and the lungs of today.
